Louhans in the Saone et Loire department is a town of 7,000 inhabitants at the confluence of the Seille and Solnan rivers. The name comes from the 5th century word “Löwing”, or “agreeable place by the water”. The town is the administrative centre for the Bresse area, and is famous for its animal fairs. Whilst the cattle and pig fairs are less populous than in previous times, the Monday poultry market is still very lively.
