Joseph Niepce

Joseph Niepce, later known as Nicephore Niepce, inventor of photography, was born in Chalon sur Saone in 1765. He wasn’t just interested in photography - he invented an internal combustion engine in 1807, and a predecessor of the bicycle in 1818.

On 28th May 1816, after an exposure lasting an astonishing eight hours, he succeeded in taking the first ever photograph, of the view from a window of his house.
