The quarry at Comblanchien near Nuits St Georges in the Cote d’Or department is known as the “French Carrara” due to the extremely high quality of its marble. The stone is very hard, and has been used in the Louvre museum and the airport at Orly. The marble was formed when the area was a shallow warm lagoon, 165 million years ago.
