Cluny is a pretty little town of 5,000 inhabitants on the banks of the river Grosne in the department of Saone et Loire. Built around the ancient abbey, much of which still survives, the site is unique for its assembly of buildings demonstrating the heights of 12th and 13th century ecclesiastical, military and civic architecture.
