Chalon sur Saone, Saone et Loire, is a riverside town of 70,000 inhabitants, and the second largest town in Burgundy after Dijon. Although the modern town is surrounded by unattractive industrial zones, the medieval centre, now mostly pedestrianised, is well worth a visit, and there are several interesting tourist attractions including a museum named after Chalon’s most famous son, Joseph Niepce, inventor of photography.
